)ur Communities Will Not Be Sacrificed for Oil & Gas Profits
ABOUT THE MOVEMENT
Ask the Army Corps to Stop Fossil Fuel Projects Along the Gulf
Big Oil & Big Gas corporations are racing to build new and expand existing dirty projects – increase fracking, pipelines, oil and gas terminals, and massive plastics plants – from the Permian Basin to and across the Gulf Coast. Projects in the permitting process with USACE, if allowed, will repeat the pollution of decades past, directly affecting Black, Indigenous, and low income communities. These people, their health and homes, have already been sacrificed, without notice and against their will, for oil and gas profits.
It’s impossible for the United States to reach its climate target commitments if these projects move forward. Frontline communities across the Gulf South and around the globe are calling on the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers (USACE) to protect our water, land, air, and all living things. The Army Corps must evaluate the systemic environmental racism in its permitting process, and strive to bring justice to the communities impacted by these systems.
Help us #DefendTheGulf and call on USACE to:
- Meet and tour frontline communities with local leaders to consult on permitting of dangerous, polluting facilities near their homes.
- Conduct a regional Environmental Impact Statement to understand the cumulative impacts of pollution on communities, air, water, wildlife, and land!
- Uphold environmental, restorative, and language justice in their work.
Join us today and sign this letter that we will send and deliver to USACE leaders across the Nation. We sent more than 5,000 letters in December, we’ve sent more than 2,500 emails in June in our escalation, and our goal is to reach 10,000 signatures. Join us to hold the Army Corps accountable.
The Army Corps (@USACEHQ) should protect people, not polluter’s profits. #DefendTheGulf | #DefiendeElGolfo! Our climate future depends on it.

LATEST UPDATE
From Texas to Florida, environmental justice communities and Tribal leadership are working together to demand a meeting with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about the permits they fast-track for the fossil fuel industry in our communities and on Tribal lands. In December, our partnership, called Defend the Gulf, mobilized to hand deliver and mail over 5,000 letters to Army Corps offices throughout the Gulf coast: Corpus Christi, Galveston, Port Arthur, Houston, Freeport, New Orleans, and additionally D.C. The demands in our letter are clear; the Army Corps should meet the most impacted Tribal leadership and residents and tour our communities and consider regional cumulative impacts. Public input, a part of the Army Corps permitting process, must include conversation with the people affected and seeing the flare stacks, smog, and endangered wetlands for themselves.
Unfortunately, the Army Corps has not replied to any requests for a meeting. Therefore, we’re escalating our action and asking you to call on the Army Corps to meet with frontline leadership across the Gulf.
Join us to amplify our demands by sharing our message to the United States Army Corps demanding they meet with frontline communities to address the pollution petrochemical projects have on the people, air, water, wildlife, and land!
Our Goal: 10,000 unique emails to the Army Corps of Engineers leadership.
